The Assistant Director of Pre-Progressional Programs serves to support undergraduate students' success and progress to degree. Assigned to the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), assists in providing leadership for the delivery of a highly effective academic experience to students pursuing undergraduate majors that require admission. Advises undergraduate students, helping them understand academic requirements, policies, and procedures; utilize university resources; and identify and pursue a successful path to a degree. Identifies and supports students who are experiencing academic challenges and provides pre-professional programming for students within CHHS.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as an expert on the unique academic needs of students pursuing CHHS undergraduate majors that require admission. 

Utilizes technological tools (e.g., SS Navigate and Banner) and other best practice approaches to know, understand and advise students. 

Compiles and utilizes data in partnership with the Director of Pre-Professional Programs to inform advising practices and programming.

Works collaboratively with colleagues within CHHS, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to support the success of students.

Collaborates with departments to develop, maintain and utilize academic advising and recruitment materials for CHHS undergraduate degree programs that require admission.

Provides training on best practices to those who provide academic advising in the College of Health and Human Services.

Works collaboratively with Academic Advising to provide advisement services to students who are exploring other majors or transitioning into SCSU.

May supervise part-time staff, graduate assistants, student workers or others as needed. 

May involve occasional work in the evenings and/or on weekends.

Performs other duties related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of the responsibility of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in student affairs, social work, counseling, education, student development, or human services related field; Three (3) years of experience providing educational support through academic advising or other student support services; Direct experience working successfully with diverse populations; Demonstrated strong ability to communicate orally and in writing; Demonstrated ability to be creative and develop innovative academic programming; Experience using technological tools to support student success or demonstrated capacity to learn; Demonstrated effectiveness at independently managing projects and working collaboratively as a member of a team; Strong interpersonal skills and capacity for building partnerships across campus; Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment; Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail; Ability to generate reports and use data to inform decision making and engage in evidence-based practice.

Preferred qualifications:  Prior experience in an academic advising role at a college or university or work that includes knowing curricular requirements; having significant faculty interaction; knowledge of academic disciplines within CHHS; Higher Education admissions experience; Experience with supervising student employees.

These qualifications may be waived for individuals with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
