In August 2020, American Express launched a new network in mainland China through our joint venture, Express Company (EC). Amex is the first foreign network to operate in China, and this represents a significant opportunity for us to compete in one of the largest and most advanced payments markets in the world. The Enterprise China Management (ECM) team partners across EC and Amex to build the China business and capitalize on this incredibly exciting opportunity for growth. 

The Director role will be focused on liaising with key members of Express Company and other internal Amex stakeholders to develop and execute our product and benefits initiatives. In addition, this role will be responsible in taking a leading role in defining the market’s product and issuer engagement strategy.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Act as key relationship manager in partnership between Amex and Express Company; interface with product and benefits leads at Amex and EC
  • Define product-line strategy for credit and debit products; identify ways to innovate and evolve products to drive growth of business
  • Lead oversight of product launches in China, ensuring operational excellence
  • Track product performance and derive insights to inform EC strategy setting
  • Manage EC’s product strategy execution and make informed exceptions decisions based on business rationale and data analysis
  • Drive growth of the premium segment for EC, including devising long-term premium servicing strategy and tracking third party performance
  • Oversee extension of Amex global benefits to products in China and support development of new benefits, including opportunity identification, negotiations, contracting, and fulfillment
  • Drive delivery against EC timelines by managing relationships with stakeholders, identifying opportunities and obstacles/risks and developing strategic recommendations
  • Work with EC and AXP stakeholders to troubleshoot and resolve any potential customer escalations
  • Serve as the face of the China business to Amex stakeholders and represent EC in key business decisions / business development discussions
  • Bring AXP best practices and thought leadership to EC while becoming a go-to-expert on the China market and consumer trends

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience, with expertise in financial products, partner management, and/or benefits strategy
  • Adept at forming thoughtful and considered perspectives and defining a plan/roadmap
  • Adaptable and comfortable working on a variety of initiatives, many without an established process or solution
  • Ability to bring structure to imperfect information, problem solve, and define ways of doing new things
  • Ability to execute on strategy and pivot as priorities and scenarios shift
  • Strong partner management skills with the ability to manage internal and external partners at varied band levels; aptitude for influencing in complex situations
  • Strong work ethic with an intense will-to-win and demonstrated personal excellence with attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communicator with strong executive presence
  • Ability to coach strategic thought and high-quality work; prior people management experience preferred
  • Working proficiency in Mandarin (speaking and writing) highly preferred; knowledge of China cultural norms and market nuances preferred 
  • Flexibility to work across multiple time zones, as needed
  • Ability to travel to mainland China, estimated once a quarter

Hybrid – based in NYC, three days in office

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
